On the south-west coast
Pantai Cenang is Langkawi's liveliest beach: a long strip of sand with cafés, shops and water sports, and the easiest sunsets on the island.
Pantai Tengah, just south of Cenang, is calmer and lined with small resorts and restaurants.
Pantai Kok, further north-west near Telaga Harbour, has clear water and a view of the Machinchang range.
In the north
Tanjung Rhu is known for its fine sand, casuarina trees and, at low tide, sandbars you can walk out on.
Pantai Pasir Tengkorak is a small, shaded beach on the road between Datai and Tanjung Rhu, popular for a picnic and a swim.
Pantai Pasir Hitam, the black sand beach, is a short stop on the north coast road.
Datai Bay sits below the rainforest in the north-west corner; parts of it are reserved for resort guests.
Islands and quieter spots
Pulau Beras Basah and other nearby islands are reached by island-hopping boat tours, usually booked from Pantai Cenang or Kuah.
Teluk Yu and Pantai Teluk Burau are less crowded stops when you want space to yourself.
Good to know
Most beaches have free roadside parking. Bring water and sun protection, and check local signs before swimming: some beaches have jellyfish in certain months.
